OUR HISTORY
Denver Justice Project began as a support group for people who have experienced law enforcement violence. In 2015, our volunteer group participated in an unprecedented community-led effort to recall then Denver District Attorney (DA) Mitchell Morrissey, for his misuse of such a powerful office because he neglected to charge violent police officers and sheriff’s deputies who murdered and or assaulted community members, who lied on official reports and engaged in other types of misconduct. While our efforts did not result in recalling the DA, it did however blaze a national trail around the importance of the role and influence of the District Attorney’s office on the community. It was also a powerful step in creating a strong coalition of community members determined to bring meaningful change to people’s lives and our communities by radically transforming the criminal legal system and its outcomes.
